In what was a surprise for me Microsoft have announced one of the new features with Service Pack 2 for Exchange 2007 will be a plug-in to allow out of the box backup support for Exchange 2007 on Windows 2008.
I was surprised as so far all the technical documentation for Exchange 2010 also points to no native support for backing up Exchange 2010 so I thought the chances of them adding this support in Exchange 2007 at this stage was un-likely.
Anyway you can read more details over at the Exchange team blog. The plug-in enables the Windows Server backup in Windows 2008. The backup needs to backup the entire volume where the Exchange storage groups are located however it also allows a backup of the storage groups and a purge of the transaction logs. This was sorely missed when we all found out that Windows 2008 did not have this feature and I'm glad MS have come to the party albeit after quite a long time.
